BIOVIN attended the Premium Tasting 2017 event held at the Intercontinental Hotel in Mendoza on the 18th and 19th of this month.
Premium Tasting was born in 2011 with the aim of enjoying the best wines of the continent in an exclusive blind tasting in which winemakers, sommeliers, wine buyers, specialized press and general public are invited.
During the first day in Mendoza, several clinics and seminars were held. There, numerous topics of interest for the industry, the press and wine lovers were discussed.
This year, the event was conducted by Paz Levinson and Flavia Rizuto, both Argentine sommeliers, and Tim Atkin, the English journalist and critic. The event took place on Friday night at the InterContinental Hotel located in Guaymallén and brought together a record of 500 people, including the country’s leading winemakers and members of the region’s wine industry.
This edition had a greater offer of whites, which were presented in two “flights”, as they are called in the category, which came to a total of the 36 wines tasted according to styles and origins.
The tasting focuses on a premium segment, where only qualify wines that have scored more than 92 points from some of the world’s most prestigious critics and publications, namely: the Americans Robert Parker and Stephen Tanzer, Tim Atkin himself (who attended the event for the first time) and magazines Decanter or Wine Spectator. In this grading system, the maximum is 100. This figure was scratched by two of the labels tasted on Friday in Mendoza: the Gran Enemigo Gualtallary 2012 (a Cabernet Franc), with 98 points Parker, and the Teho Malbec 2014, with 98 points Atkin.
